Moyes on Kudus starting a game
BBC Sport after Newcastle game asked Moyes what Kudus has to do to get a Premier League start for the Hammers.

Moyes answered

“He (Kudus) will be in the team for years to come so we are not in a huge hurry,” Moyes said matter-of-factly.

“The team is getting good results (so there’s no need to change at the moment).

“But he can play a big role in the future.”

Sullivan - how's that new 50m player settling in Davie?
Moyes - I don't know how/where to play him, besides he's the German's signing so I don't want to give him a game
Sullivan - oh, ok Davie, do you think we can sell him on like you did with Haller & Scamacca when you couldn't/wouldn't/didn't know how to play them either?
Moyes - I won you a cup, I'm fireproof
Sullivan - I know Davie, thanks ever so much coz its kept those fucking minions on the terraces happy and off my back for a while
Moyes - And don't you fucking forget it
Sullivan - thanks Davie, don't worry, I won't

Both cunts

There are other players to move on first that are worse

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
I agree that I think Soucek should be a player we look to move on next summer. I’m sure there will be interest in a 60+ international goal scoring defensive midfielder.

I’m just not as bothered about him for now and would rather have a decent striker and couple of full backs before he needs to go.

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
He’s playing better as you say Willtell but longer term ( next season ) we need better. The goals scored and odd timely defensive interventions ( clearing headers, outstretched leg for a last ditch tackle ) divert attention from the damming stats of less than 20 touches in some games, less than 10 completed / accurate passes , ease by which he sometimes gets bypassed and miscontrols and poor passing that loses us the ball.

He’s doing an ok job for now but is imho one of the weak links when in the starting 11. Him, Antonio, Benrahma and Coufal in that order all need to be upgraded over the next 12 months as first 11 starters in the league. They can still play a part in the squad in other competitions or as subs in games but not starters

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
I like your well thought out posts Russ. However I’m not so sure that Soucek was shackled to suit Rice was the reason for his poor performances.

The fact that he asked for a pay rise that was rejected. It probably annoyed him that teammates earned a lot more money than he did. Kretinsky intervened to get him more and he’s been fine since.

It’s difficult but a little more patience and we could potentially have a plan A & a plan B for games…..

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
Threesixty - I think Soucek is better on the ball that most give him credit for. But you do have a point, he is not good 'enough' on the ball. But is that what Moyes wants? I think Moyes wants him just to be a target and get on the end of balls in from JWP which we all thought was the case anyway. With Alvarez and JWP there, Moyes has given Soucek more freedom and he does look more like the player we bought rather than the player that was shackled to please Declan Rice who demanded to be more involved offensively and got what he wanted. If Soucek can replicate his early West Ham form by being given that freedom then happy days,

That’s broadly how I see it too Threesixty

If we want to cement ourselves in the top 6-8 or better we need all players to be technically excellent. Soucek isn’t and neither are Antonio and Coufal. Coufal compensates with his energy to an extent but we need better next season Imo. Soucek has another problem. He’s very very slow!

Antonio and. Benny need upgrading and the latter is not starting so his exit seems inevitable

With better technical

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
The problem with Soucek is that it's hard in 2023 to have such a "seemingly" technically limited player in the middle of the park. No matter how much energy and hardwork they bring, the technical limitation means it's hard to beat top teams.

You cant be shit on the ball if you play that far up the field imho.

However, maybe that was him last year pretending to be a DM. And we haven't seen the real soucek... hopefully!
Its looking more promising than it was previously.

You have got that wrong Russ. Only Alvarez is a defensive midfielder according to the smart arses of WHO…

Good post by the way.

Willy's making up new positions now, the bloke is ahead of his time clearly. I look forward to us buying our right sided left wing strike-keeper in summer.

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
Soucek will be picked ahead of Kudus every time by Moyes because Moyes is a manager than goes safety first and tries to stay in a game at 0-0 as long as he can. We all know this.

Once he is either comfortable we will win or is forced to change tact and go for attack then he will make changes. Not before.

That's the reason why, despite the ECL success, and generally a much stronger and stable club, many supporters still want him out. They feel that his approach is holding the club and that results and performances could be alot better and more exciting.

To be fair, results are pretty decent at the moment and Soucek is playing a lot better. He's been given a more advanced role which suits him better. Alvarez is the main stopper and JWP can also play as a blocker but also has the ability to pick a pass and deliver dangerous dead balls.

I feel that perhaps a team with Alvarez, Soucek and JWP is a little too loaded with defensive midfielders but Moyes does seem to have found them all very specific roles within the team. I also feel we look well balanced and quite positive with the ball.

So, for me, its a tough one. I see Moyes' point. But I also see Kudus potentially being the ignition that we need to blow teams away. Right now, I'd say keep the same eleven but Moyes must look to get Kudus on sooner.

"It’s actually very simple. Soucek is a DM"

he wasn't when we bought him. he was tried in that role last season and failed miserably. use your own eyes/brain, (if it still works), watch him during games. he's a fucking BOX TO BOX midfielder. Alvarez is a DM

"His primary role is defending"

his primary role is contributing in both grounds halfs of the pitch, clearing crosses when defending set pieces and offering a threat when in possession. ALVAREZ's primary role is defending

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
I think the Kudus / Soucek question just depends on whether we want to attack teams early doors or play "Moyesball" and sit back on 20/30% possession.

In Europe we seem to go for it early doors. More possession and pressing up the pitch. In the league we are generally opposite.

I think its going to depend on whether Moyes gets enough points to expiriment with actually trying to win a game instead of not losing one.

Any manager who actively wants to control their pwn destiny and win a game will play Kudus straight away. Moyes just isn't that guy bless him!

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
It's been proven umpteen times that there are some very knowledgeable football fans everywhere, but I think one main difference from them and people inside the game, like Moyes, is that the latter can put on training sessions and organize players positions etc. Most knowledgeable football fans would be able to put the cones out but wouldn't have a clue what to do after that.

Willtell 2:00 Fri Oct 13
Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
It’s actually very simple. Soucek is a DM so perhaps you need to tell all the football reference websites that list him as DM to reclassify your new CM role?

His primary role is defending but his strength is the running he does to get into the opposition box.

I agree Kudus should be starting and perhaps Moyes will have to leave out a DM to accommodate him. Soucek is probably favourite to make way but he might need to be patient if Moyes past record is anything to go by.

Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
We all might not know as much about football as Moyes, but I can absolutely guarantee you one thing, there is not a single other manager in the Premier League who would have a player as good as Paqueta, who is one of the best central midfielders in the league, and would stick him out on the left flank to accommodate Tomas fucking Soucek.

Every single one of them would also be starting Kudus.

Manuel 1:25 Fri Oct 13
Re: Moyes on Kudus starting a game
Willtell - I would say there are broadly 3 types of midfielders, a DM, a CM and an attacking midfielder. Soucek is a CM, Alvarez a DM.
